20th December 2019: Jaipur: There has been a paradigm shift in higher education in our country in the past few decades. There has been a proliferation of new universities, offering professional courses, multidisciplinary specialisations, as well as more rigorous training in the traditional subjects- whether in the sciences or the humanities, or other fields. You are among the beneficiaries of these strides made in higher education in our country in the recent decades. However, while we have made great strides, we still have a long way to go. Although a quality education has become far more affordable and accessible than it was in the past, it still remains out of the reach of many, due to the persistent inequality of wealth, resources and opportunity. You are fortunate and blessed to have before you greater opportunities for personal and professional growth and fulfillment than any generation before. With these words Chief Guest on the occasion Justice Dalveer Bhandari, ICJ, Hague began to deliver his convocation address.
IIS (Deemed to be University) hosted its Eighth Convocation on Friday at the university premises. The Chancellor of the University Justice S. N. Bhargava presided over the function.
With the permission of the Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor of the University Dr. Ashok Gupta declared the convocation open and welcomed the chief guest, dignitaries, guests and graduands present in the convocation hall. Later, he delivered the welcome speech and apprised the audience with the highlights and achievements of the university. He was also happy to announce that the university will be celebrating its silver jubilee year in 2020-21.
In the welcome speech, Dr. Gupta talked about the journey which began in 1995 as the International College for Girls. He was happy to announce that the university is into the second decade of national presence as a much sought after institute of higher learning.
Around 1750 students were conferred their degrees and diplomas in the various programmes, out of which there are 45 Ph.D., 460 Post graduation, 1198
Under graduation & 39 Advanced Diploma level graduands. Also, 60 Gold Medals and Plaques, 14 Endowment Awards and 289 Merit Certificates were awarded to meritorious graduands.
Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) Honoris Causa conferred upon Justice Dalveer Bhandari
IIS (deemed to be UNIVERSITY) conferred upon Justice Dalveer Bhandari the Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) Honoris Causa in the field of Law and Justice. Justice Bhandari is a visionary and one of the finest judges the world has ever witnessed. He holds the distinction of being among the selected few
Indian judges who have had the opportunity for making their mark in the international arena. His election to the International Court of Justice is a matter of pride for the entire country. After practicing as a successful lawyer for 23 years, he was appointed judge at the Delhi High Court in 1991. He was then appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. In October 2005, he was elevated to the Supreme Court as Judge. In 2007, he was unanimously elected as
President of the India International Law Foundation and continues in that position.
From ordering state governments for ensuring sufficient night shelters for the homeless, passing orders in favour of the right to free and compulsory education, allocating funds for malnutrition in the five most backward districts of Maharashtra to the release of a higher quantum of supply of food grains for the population living below the poverty line, the courage of his conviction has been in evidence, repeatedly with every landmark judgment that Justice Bhandari has delivered in the interest of civic society.
A plethora of national and international recognitions such as the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in India and the First Justice Nagendra Singh International Peace Award, stand testimony to the enduring magnitude of his contributions towards adding a whole new dimension to our constitutional jurisprudence.

Right from his early years as a surgeon, Dr. Shah has endeavoured to magnify his impact on the patients’ well-being by embracing innovations in research and medical practices. His ingenious and ground-breaking inventions, such as the OS Needle and the Zero Technique, have completely revolutionized knee-replacement surgery. To push the national narrative on healthcare reform beyond its usual notion of innovation, Dr. Shah has put to practice several novel ideas including setting up of a Bone Bank, maintaining a Large Joint Inventory and a Joint Replacement Registry, undertaking patient- centric initiatives such as the We Care Programme, and establishing a nonprofit organization which conducts health awareness-lectures and free check-up camps for the needy. Dr. Gupta welcomes graduands
While empowering the female graduands, Dr. Gupta inspired them to focus on their dreams, to be prepared to take calculated risks and do not deterred by failures. He also hoped that even after bidding adieu to this campus, graduands will continue to draw inspiration from the deep spirit of IISU with its focus on education for life along with education for living. This will help in their diverse journey of discovery, of breaking the mould and shattering glass ceilings, of sailing uncharted seas and, opening new vistas to the human spirit.
He has also shown high hopes on the students who leave this campus with a deep reservoir of the IISU spirit of inclusion, diversity and equality, a reservoir that will grow over the years and invited to join BANDHAN- the association of the alumnae of this University so that you can stay connected with your alma mater.
