IIS University remembers Late Prof. N.K.Jain

31st October 2019: Jaipur: It is every educator’s aspiration to be a torch-bearer for the younger generation, contributing to not only their academic but social and psychological development as well. Such educators redefine the conventional contours of teaching, are impelled by an insatiable curiosity to look at texts in newer lights and possess the power to influence not only a student’s career trajectory but her approach to life. The Department of English of IIS (Deemed to be University) made an humble attempt by organizing a memorial lecture on Thursday at IIIM Auditorium to pay tribute to the memory of Prof. N.K.Jain, who had worked relentlessly towards, and achieved so much, in realizing the goals of education.

The lecture was a conscious effort to draw inspiration and guidance from the rich legacy he has left behind. Mrs. Mithilesh Jain, wife of late Prof. N.K.Jain, their children, other family members, friends and colleagues were in attendance. Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty, Former Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Orissa and Member, Governing Board, Auroville Foundation was the guest speaker on the occasion.

The programme commenced by seeking the blessings and diving assistance of Goddess Saraswati. Dr. Ashok Gupta, Vice-Chancellor presented a token of deep gratitude to Prof. Mohanty and Dr. Raakhi Gupta, Registrar of the university welcomed Mrs. Mithilesh Jain by presenting a shawl.

Dr. Ashok Gupta paid tribute to the memory of Prof. N.K.Jain and extended a word of welcome to audience. Dr. Gupta remembered Prof. Jain’s14 year old association with the University. He also appreciated Prof. Jain’s wit and humour for which he was popular amongst students and faculty members.

Prof. Sachidananda Mohanty delivered lecture on “Cosmopolitanism in an age of Insularity and Xenophobia” in which he traced the roots of cosmopolitan modernity to its Indic sources and signaled the limitations of the modernity project. It also presented an alternative view of cosmopolitanism, citizenship and modernity, in early 20th century India, and through the multiple lenses of mysticism, friendship, art and politics, that could well be an answer to the current global crisis underway.

Shefali Martins, a student of Prof. Jain walk down memory lane and expressed her gratitude by sharing experiences. Dr. Rimika Singhvi, Head, Department of English delivered vote of thanks to the chief guest and the audience.
