Indian Council of Social Science Research sponsored National Conference on “Environmental Pollution: Consequences and Control” was organized by The IIS University in collaboration with Indian Association for Air Pollution Control on Friday at IIIM Auditorium. Dr. Suresh Tiwari, Scientist E (Deputy Director) & Officer-in-charge, Delhi Unit, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorological, Pune delivered the keynote address on the occasion.

The inaugural session began with welcome note by Prof. K.S.Sharma, Advisor, The IIS University. Prof. Sharma welcomed the keynote speaker as well as participants, research scholars, academicians present at the conference. Dr. Pradeep Bhatnagar, Conference Director discussed the aims and objectives of the conference. “After Paris Agreement on Climate Change that will enter into force on Nov 4, this conference holds much of the importance in finding solutions to curb atmosphere pollution, he said.”

Dr. Suresh Tiwari in his keynote address talked about the impact of air pollution on climate change. While discussing about the adverse effects of black carbon and organic carbon he said that organic carbon scatter the solar energy due to which temperature decreases on earth where as black carbon absorbs the solar heat which results in increase in the temperature. According to him both the carbons are harmful for the climate. “If more carbonaceous will present in the atmosphere the temperature will increase which will lead to change in hydraulic cycle, he asserted.”

On asking how youth can contribute in curbing pollution, he said that they could help in spreading awareness on reducing the usage of biogas and biofuel since it release a lot of carbon in the atmosphere.

Dr. Prashant Goswami, Director, CSIR-NISTADS, New Delhi addressed the gathering on environmental pollution, a comprehensive approach for control. In his deliberation, he said that pollution has affected the quality of life. He stressed on simulation and its implementation. On asking to put a ban on diesel vehicles to control pollution, Dr. Goswami has said that in today’s climate no single solution will help to curb atmosphere pollution.

The second day of the conference will include sessions on water pollution and control technologies and environmental health and society. Dr. Charu Jhamariya and Mr. Ashish Tambi are the organizing secretaries of the conference.
