National Seminar on Sustainable Fashion concluded

16th September 2017: Jaipur: National Seminar on ‘Sustainable Fashion: Creating Global Vision’ organized by The Department of Fashion and Textile of The IIS University concluded on Friday at IIIM auditorium. Ms. Anita Ahuja, Creative Director, Converse India, New Delhi delivered the keynote address on the occasion.

The seminar commenced with welcome address delivered by Dr. Ashok Gupta, Vice-Chancellor, The IIS University in which he said that Fashion and Textile industry is the second most polluted industry after Oil industry. The Fashion and Textile industries use extensive amount of water, energy,
chemicals and raw materials throughout the supply chain, all of which places heavy demands on earth’s natural resources. On the other hand, consumer dry cleans or washes, dries and irons their clothes and discards the clothes, often into landfill instead of re-using, recycling and refashioning.

Ms. Anita Ahuja discussed the importance of sustainable fashion and said that 98 percent focus of the fashion industry is on fast fashion and only 2 percent of the industry produces ethical or sustainable fashion. While discussing her brand ‘Liffafa’ and the work that she does said that the plastic has been which were sent for washing and sterilizing process and then out of it fashion products such as backpacks, clutches, clothes etc are created through binding and layering process. She further said that plastic cannot be recycled since it is very harmful for the environment.

“Plastic melting process is very harmful for the environment and no plastic can be recycled. We at our NGO up-cycle the plastic which is a more sustainable and environment friendly process, Ahuja concludes.”

Dr. Radha Kashyap was the convener of the conference while Isheeta Chaturvedy was the organizing secretary of the conference.
