SPIC MACAY

Kathak performance by Pandit Deepak Maharaj left the audience spellbound

Silence is the real definition of dance: Pandit Deepak Maharaj

Experiments destroy the purity of Kathak: Pandit Deepak Maharaj

16thJanuary 2019: Jaipur: Noise of words is merely a Tamasha, silence is the real definition of dance (Shabdon ka shor to sirf Tamasha Hai, Maun hi Nritya ki Paribhasha hai). This is how Pandit Deepak Maharaj, son of Pandi Birju Maharaj defined ‘Kathak’ to the student audience on the occasion of SPIC MACAY program organized by the IIS (Deemed to be University) at International School of Informatics and Management (IIIM), Technical Campus on Wednesday.

He further said that his father and Guru Pandit Birju Maharaj has actually raised the bar of Kathak as a dance form. Pandit Deepak Maharaj showed resentment towards experiments and remix being done in the name of Kathak. According to him, such things destroy the purity of the dance form. He says that Kathak should be performed in the proper outfit to maintain its essence and originality. He shared his memories with his father as how he used to keep a check on a scene or the costume to be worn by the actress before taking up any bollywood project. This is the reason why iconic songs Dhai Sham Rok Lai from Devdas and Mohe Rang Do Lal from Bajirao Mastani are still fresh in the minds of audiences.

Pandit Deepak Maharaj was accompanied by Shree Pranshu Chaturlal on Tabla, Janaab Gulab Vaaris on Vocal & Harmonium and Janaab Muhammad Ayuub on Sarangi.

He presented various forms of Kathak like Tukda, 16 circles, Tihais etc with great ease and left everyone spellbound. His expressions spoke thousand words when he narrated Makhan Chori story through this popular dance form.

The session ended with a traditional jugal-bandi which was enjoyed by all.
