SPIC MACAY

Kathak dance by Mahua Shankar left the audience spellbound

08th September 2016: Jaipur: Kathak dance is a beautiful combination of rhythm and expressions but sadly youth focuses on expression and somewhere neglects the importance of rhythm. This is the reason why the younger generation follows the western dance forms without knowing the fact that these forms are the origin of classical dance forms. These were the thoughts expressed by renowned Kathak Dancer Mahua Shankar who gave a performance under the aegis of SPIC MACAY at The IIS University on Thursday.

Her style of dance is intended for the lay man. This is the reason that she began her performance with explaining the nuances of the dance form by giving various examples including hide and seek and throwing and catching a ball etc.

Mahua Shankar, trained by Pandit Birju Maharaj, accompanied by her elder sister Nupur Shankar, Vijay Mishra was on Tabla and Suhaiv Hassan on Harmonium.

She then presented various forms of Kathak like Tukda, 16 circles, Tihais etc with great ease and left everyone spellbound. Her expression spoke thousand words when she narrated Makhan Chori story through this popular dance form.

Mahua Shankar expressed the essence of rhythm and showed its relation with life, by giving many examples. It was the visual delight for the audience when she performed Sufiana Thumri on ae ri sakhi more piya ghar aaye.
The session ended with a traditional jugal-bandi which was enjoyed by all.
